Object Type
DescriptionIn 1963 Oumar Ly opened
his photographic studio in
Northern Senegal, naming it
Thioffy
Studio after the
district in which
he was born. Senegal’s
recent independence provided Ly with a steady source of income. He created
portraits for new government identity
cards and for private consumption.
Ly also took his
camera into the district to capture people
outside of their own homes, bringing with
him enough supplies to develop and print for several days. By the time of Ly’s
death, he had amassed an archive of
more than 5,000 images,
creating a comprehensive social portrait of the Senegal
River region.
