by Rhod Rothfuss’s irregular canvases, Freire sought to produce concrete, autonomous
sculptures that a viewer could manipulate. Here, she transforms industrial materials
into a play of line in space. The hinged pieces of painted iron produce
hard-edged, geometric forms that unfold in different directions. Like Kosice’s Röyi, also on view, this structure
embraces interactivity to merge art with everyday life, a key aim of the
avant-garde’s utopian impulse in Latin America and Europe.
