DescriptionCabinetmaker George Henkels had a thriving business in Philadelphia in the 1850s and 1860s. A keen self-promoter, he regularly advertised that his furniture reflected the latest French fashions, which were the leading design trends of the time. The clock’s elaborately carved wooden case was made in Henkels’s Philadelphia factory, but the clockworks were imported from France. Its dial proudly proclaims “George J. Henkels, Paris and Philadelphia.”
