DescriptionAfter making photographs for a few years in Osaka, and after moving in 1974 to Düsseldorf, where he participated in a workshop run by the conceptual artist Klaus Rinke, Keiji Uematsu became interested in the compression of a space framed by the camera and turned his attention to the relationship between real space and the visual frame. He made a number of works that compare the illusory nature of photography and the actual state of objects and spaces. Many of these works were made in suites, initially because Uematsu wanted to examine multiple directions of forces in a single space. However, he soon began producing images in multiples as his interest shifted to the presentation of the relativity of such images, as seen in Standing Frame (TR:105-2014.A-.C,) and Wave Motion I. Through these works, Uematsu tried to critique illusion and relentlessly pursued the actual. What he confronted was the real space in which he placed his body, as well as the relationship between the viewer and the object.
