ProvenanceThomas Howard, Earl of Arundel; Lord Kinnaird at Rossie Priory; [R. Langton Douglas, London]; Percy S. Straus, New York, August 1932; bequeathed to MFAH, 1944.

Wenceslaus Hollar became one of the most admired etchers in Europe during the seventeenth century due to the meticulous quality of his draftsmanship. This printed portrait of Sir Henry Guildford, Comptroller of the Royal Household for Henry VIII, replicates a small painted portrait of the same subject in the Earl of Arundel’s vast art collection. An engraving of his wife wearing a jeweled bonnet accompanied it (fig. 31.1). The print was intended for a comprehensive etched catalogue to demonstrate the patron’s good taste.
