BiographyMaxime Emile Louis MAUFRA - 1861 / 1918
Born in Nantes, Maufra who was destined to a career in business came several times to Liverpool and then to London where he discovered Turner. Back in Nantes he started painting in a very academic style. He was introduced to "Impressionism" by his friend and artist John Flornoy who invited him in 1886 to a Salon where works by Gauguin, Seurat, Monet, Pissarro, Signac were exhibited. In 1890 Maufra met Gauguin and Serusier in Pont-Aven. He will participate with them to the decoration of l' Auberge du Pouldu. He will also associate with the Nabis movement, especially with Henry Moreau and Gustave Loiseau. Durand Ruel were his Agents for many years and assured his commercial success. Maufra is renowned for his seascapes and marine scenes and belongs to the Pont-Aven School.
