BiographyAmerican, born April 13, 1924, Gastonia, North CarolinaJOHN T. BIGGERS, a Houston-Based Artist known nationally for epic paintings that chronicled the African-American experience, died January 25, 2001. Dr. Biggers founded the Art Department at Texas Southern University in Houston in 1949 and influenced generations of students with his special talent. He created 26 Murals for public spaces throughout the nation and is represented in important collections such as those of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, Hampton University, Texas Southern University, University of Houston Downtown, Smithsonian, and throughout his home state of North Carolina. In 1995, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston mounted a 50-year retrospective of Dr. Biggers work that traveled around the country. Recently, he was honored with one of the first Texas Medal Of The Arts Awards. He is survived by his wife of more than fifty years, Hazel, sister, Terrie Biggers Arnold, nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 31, 2001 from 1:00 p.m. at McCoy & Harrison Funeral Home located at 4918 Martin Luther King Boulevard. Funeral services and burial will be held in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Friday, February 2, 2001. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Texas Southern University Museum or the John T. Biggers Scholarship Fund. Memorial services are planned to be held in Houston at a date to be announced.
