BiographyBorn: 1899, Rosario di Santa Fe, Argentina. Died: 1968, Varese, Italy. Education: Brera Academy, Milan from 1928 - 1930. Art: Although Fontana is primarily known for his later polychrome canvases which are slit with a knife, he also produced one of the most radical and major bodies of ceramic art in this century. He made his sculptural debut in Italy in 1928 with a solo exhibition of incised polychrome ceramic sculptures (fired, then colored with paint). From then on until shortly before his death in 1968, Fontana continued to work extensively in ceramics.
