Japanese, 1885–1962
Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962) was a publisher and the driving force behind Shin Hanga - a Japanese printmaking art movement. He employed higly skilled carvers and printers and commissioned artists print designs in traditional Japanese style mixed with elements of modern Western painting like perspective or the display of the effects of light and shadow. Watanabe exported most of the Shin Hanga prints to the USA and Europe due to a lack of interest from the domestic market. In the late 30s and during the Pacific war, his business had a difficult stand. After the end of world war II his heirs continued the company business.
