Biography(Born December 11, 1945, The Hough, Cheshire, England) Astbury studied from 1960 to 1968 at the Stoke-on-Trent College of Art and from 1968 to 1971 at the Royal College of Art, London. He has exhibited actively since 1971 in seminal surveys such as 'New Directions in Ceramics: Oxford Gallery, Oxford, 1972; 'State of Clay: Sunder Arts Centre, 1978 (toured Britain, Sweden, and Norway); and 'The Raw and the Cooked: Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, 1993 (toured Britain, Japan, and France). In 1965 he presented 'Background: a complex exhibition of raw clay Works sealed in large white vitrines that was shown at the Diorama Gallery, London. Astbury has remained one of the most consistently avant-garde forces in ceramic art, or 'clay art' as he prefers to term it, always pushing the edge of both aesthetic and commercial values.
