BiographyJeanne (Friedberg) Ebstel was born on March 31, 1905 in London, England. Her family moved shortly thereafter to the United States and settled in New York City. She worked for years as a legal secretary, at one point helping with a case that was ultimately presented to the United States Supreme Court. She took up the visual arts in the late 1930s while recuperating from an illness. She met John Ebstel, a painter and photographer in 1946, and they were married after a year of courtship in 1947. They moved to the cooperative apartments on the Lower East side in 1949. Both Jeanne and John were actively involved in the artistic, cultural and political life of New York City. She studied at the ASL (Art student League) of New York - a well known art school). In addition to sketches and paintings, she also occasionally took photographs. After a prolonged illness of more than a decade Jeanne Ebstel died on January 27, 2000.
