French, 1873–1947
(b Cap Breton, Landes, 9 Feb 1873; d Paris, 11 Feb 1947). French medallist. He studied under Alexandre Falgui?re and Alph?e Dubois (1831-1905) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. His work included a number of plaquettes, such as Woman at a Spring, Child Fishing, Thought and Hope: perhaps the most successful of these was Sailors' Widows. He also executed numerous portraits, both of contemporaries, including Edmond Rostand, Pierre Loti and Henri Poincar?, and of historical figures such as Moli?re and Watteau. Prud'homme contributed substantially to a series of medals showing the traditional costumes of the various provinces of France, and was commissioned to commemorate such events as the Battle of Verdun and the Signing of the Armistice (1918). Examples of his work are in the Cabinet des M?dailles, Biblioth?que Nationale, Paris.
