Roxane Kamenstein, an award-winning fashion designer, died Saturday at University Hospital in New York. Mrs. Kamenstein, who lived in Miami Beach and had homes in New York City and Westport, Conn., was 72 years old.

She was known for her elaborate evening dresses and her high-style fashions, which made use of costly fabrics. Mrs. Kamenstein was born in New York City and started her career in the merchandising field.

She wrote articles on fashion and was the author of ''The Secret of Couture Sewing'' and ''Sew Like a Pro.'' She was the recipient of a Coty Award and an International Silk citation.
