Description

With its delicately networked lines and nodes of light, Naoki Honjo’s cityscape evokes a physicality more closely resembling a miniature model than the megalopolis it depicts. The massive Cosmo Clock 21 Ferris wheel takes on a soft blur, and the surrounding cars, trees, and lampposts become barely recognizable specks amid the bird’s-eye view of Yokohama. To achieve this visual effect, Honjo used a tilt-shift lens, which allows the photographer to selectively focus the image while reducing the overall depth of field. Built on this conceit, Honjo’s series “Small Planet” highlights photography’s ability to distort perspectives even when depicting reality.
