DescriptionCofounder of the Photo League, the New York–based, left-leaning organization that championed both photography and the working man, Sid Grossman used his camera as a tool to illuminate union struggles, rural poverty, and life in Harlem. Equally, however, in the late 1940s, he captured the unfettered delight of ordinary New Yorkers soaking in the sun and sociability of Coney Island’s beach and boardwalk or, in this off-kilter whirlwind of a picture, the ebullient spirit of Little Italy’s San Gennaro festival, the quintessential New York City street fair.
