For nearly two decades, Thomas Holton photographed the Lams, a family living in New York City’s Chinatown. Despite his own Chinese heritage, Holton felt disconnected from the neighborhood and its culture. However, through his photographic engagement with the Lams, Holton found deeper connections and commonality, noting, “I consider the Lams to be an American family who happen to be Chinese. It’s the story of an American family trying to do the best they can for their children, going through the ups and downs that we all go through. None of our lives are scripted.”
