DescriptionThis set of four silver goblets, each engraved Jordan, offers Bayou Bend a rare opportunity to reunite this collection of silver with an important suite of furniture that is the focal point of its Belter Parlor. The goblets, executed in the Rococo Revival style, were fashioned by the New York silversmiths Eoff and Shepard for Green H. Jordan of Milledgeville, Georgia. About the same time, Jordan purchased a ten-piece Rococo Revival parlor suite from John Henry Belter—the most innovative and brilliant American cabinetmaker of his generation (see B.81.9.1–10). That furniture, identified by its original bill of sale (see B.78.76), had descended through five generations of the Jordan family when Miss Ima Hogg acquired it in 1973. It is highly significant as Belter’s only documented suite of furniture, which remains intact, while its invoice is the only one of his receipts presently known.
ProvenanceElizabeth Taylor Sanford Jordan (1796–1858) and/or Green Hill Jordan (1789–1855), Milledgeville, Georgia; by descent to John Harwell, Atlanta, by 2007; purchased by MFAH, 2007.
