The English photojournalist Don McCullin photographed scenes of war around the globe and, in 1971, documented a conflict on the home-front—the struggle over Northern Ireland’s status as part of Protestant United Kingdom or Catholic Ireland. On assignment for The Sunday Times Magazine, he traveled to Derry, a hub of violence during “the Troubles,” as the period was called. McCullin’s grainy image silhouettes youths fleeing British tear gas against a backdrop of chaos and confusion. Recalling this day, McCullin said, “It was inconceivable at the time that the carnage would continue unabated for another 25 years.”
