Department
Arts of Europe and the MediterraneanObject Type
of Paris artists to adopt the compositional
dynamics of Synthetic Cubism, extending
the formal rhythms seen in the paintings
of Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris into threedimensional reliefs. Still Life with Musical
Instruments reflects his particular friendship
with Gris and his admiration of his paintings.
Lipchitz made numerous studies related to this
bronze, ultimately resolving the composition
through spiraling layers of instruments,
sheet music, and the suggestion of a
textured tabletop.
