Returning from his
photographic studies in Germany, the artist Kyungwoo Chun undertook a Sa-Jin approach to reveal the complexity
of identity. A Korean term dating to the 14th century, Sa-Jin loosely translates as “depiction of the truth or soul.” In
sessions ranging from nine minutes to six days, Chun created photographic
portraits that involve a dialogue between the subject and the photographer as
the sitter looks directly into the camera. The resulting images record a
journey that Chun believes peels away the visible to make manifest the
invisible.
