Description

The body is the
canvas for the painter and poet Huang Yang. Here, he first covered a model’s
torso with white powder, then painted a landscape of ink in the manner of the literati, the historical Chinese
scholar-artists. The expressive brushstrokes were characteristic of the
Southern School of Chinese painting.

In China, the body emerged as the primary medium
of contemporary Chinese art in the 1980s. Huang Yang dynamically transforms the
art of the past into the present by translating a two-dimensional painting
style onto a three-dimensional body.
