Pedro Beruvides is an acclaimed photojournalist who won the Grand National Prize of Photography in 1982, in part for his glorifying pictures of Fidel Castro. Photographs of revolutionary leaders, martyrs, farmers, cane cutters, and centenarios (one-hundred-year-olds) circulated widely in the 1960s and 1970s and established an inspirational image of Cuban triumph in the public’s mind. Close-up portraits of common men and women who lived to an extraordinary age celebrate how everyday Cubans were heroes in their own way.
