Centenarians focus on Cuban men and women of African descent. These subjects, all 100 years old, were born before the 1886 abolition of slavery in Cuba. Although Beruvides was self-taught, he earned the top honor in the inaugural edition of the Ministry of Culture’s Cuban Photography Prize in 1982 for this series.
