Description

Celluloid-covered
plaques and buttons that combined photographic portraits with a colorful
printed surround were popular in the early 20th century, often as memorials of
loved ones. We no longer know whether this stogie-smoking young man was being
celebrated as he headed off to war or mourned as a battlefield casualty, but he
or his family chose a patriotic display showing the U.S. Capitol, soldiers
standing by artillery, and the flags of World War I allies Italy, Great
Britain, the United States, France, Belgium, and Greece.

Provenance[Jo Tartt Gallery, Washington, D.C.]; purchased by Anne Wilkes Tucker, Houston; given to MFAH, 2009.
