DescriptionMark Klett makes a direct reference to Thomas Moran’s famous painting of Yellowstone in Viewing Thomas Moran at the Source, Artist’s Point, Yellowstone. Moran painted grandiose scenes of the American landscape in the 1860s when the West was still a vast, unknown territory. Klett both pays tribute to and critiques the 19th-century political platform embedded in Moran’s vista—that it was America’s Manifest Destiny to conquer nature and expand the nation from coast to coast.
