DescriptionBy the mid-1840s, just a handful of years after the first public announcement of photography, pictures of alleged and convicted criminals were being produced as a method of tracking the criminal class. In the late 1880s, Alphonse Bertillon, chief of criminal identification for the Paris police, standardized such photographs into what is now known as the “mugshot”—two photos side by side, one frontal and one in profile.
