DescriptionFrancis
Frith produced widely popular travel photographs and photographically
illustrated books for a public eager to experience faraway lands from the
comfort of their own homes. In Egypt and the surrounding region, Frith’s
equipment included a camera outfitted with two lenses in order to produce the
100 stereographs included in Egypt,
Nubia, and Ethiopia
. Each pair of nearly identical side-by-side images was
meant to be viewed using a small stereoscope that was included with the book.
Seen through this handheld device, the images merged in the mind to create an
illusion of three dimensions, transporting readers to distant sites by virtual
reality.
