Morris Huberland’s photograph of women walking outside Bonwit Teller
department store is literally eye catching. Known for their innovative
partnerships with avant-garde artists and designers like Salvador Dalí, Jasper
Johns, James Rosenquist, and Andy Warhol, the luxury department store brought
fine art to the streets of New York. Huberland primarily photographed in
Spanish Harlem, Hell’s Kitchen, and neighborhoods inhabited by Jewish
immigrants like himself. On occasion, however, he would visit the busy
commercial streets of Midtown Manhattan to capture dynamic compositions such as
this one.
Provenance[Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York]; purchased by Joan Morgenstern, Houston, October 31, 1990; given to MFAH, 2008.
