DescriptionJoseph Foster Barham, whose portrait is featured on this bracelet, married Lady Caroline Tufton in 1792 and this miniature was likely made to commemorate the event. Foster Barham inherited considerable estates in the West Indies, England, and Wales.  His Jamaican plantations were the source of much of his wealth but, due to the slave labor, also moral anguish. A member of parliament, he later become a supporter of William Wilberforce’s attempts to secure the abolition of the slave trade.

Provenance[John Jaffa Antiques, London]; purchased by Caroline Ross, February, 1997; bequeathed to MFAH, 2005.
