DescriptionThe source print of the view of the university building at Transylvania University, built in 1817, is a drawing by Matthew Harris Jonett.The word Transylvania, meaning "across the woods" in Latin, was an apt name for the heavily forested region of western Virginia then known as Transylvania Colony and which became the state of Kentucky in 1792. In financial straits following the Civil War, Transylvania University merged with Kentucky University in 1865.

Provenance[Richard H. and Virginia A. Wood, Baltimore]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, February 26, 1963; given to MFAH, by 1966.
