For decades, Chen Changfen photographed the Great Wall—stretching from China’s Hebei to Gansu provinces—in a variety of seasons, perspectives, and places along its more than 13,000 miles. In this image, the wall is totally obscured by a low hanging cloud, with only a bank of trees in the foreground and a towering mountain in the background. Informed by traditional Chinese art, history, and philosophy, Chen’s image is organized in the classic “three distances” manner, with trees, mountains, and at the center, a cloud, the embodiment of spirituality and the beauty of nature.
