The source materials for Jason Salavon’s Emblem series are iconic films of the 1970s—in this case Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. With the assistance of an algorithm, Salavon samples individual frames of the film, which he rearranges as concentric circles that flow from center to edge tracing the film’s progression. Devoid of the representational imagery of the original films, Salavon’s pictures become a new way visualizing time-based works through a single image, engaging the aesthetic potential of data to be reconstructed into new visual forms.
