Description

Along with mutual friend and fellow photographer Johan Hagemeyer, Spencer Kellogg, Jr., traveled to California to visit Edward Weston in 1920. There, in Weston's studio, the three men collaborated on a series of portraits including this one. A sense of mystery pervades the photograph in which Kellogg, cloaked and in shadow, seems to emerge from the indeterminate background as if from another world. Today, Edward Weston is renowned for the pure, formal photographic style to which he turned in the early 1920s, and examples like this of his early, Pictorialist works demonstrating a more painterly approach to the medium are rare.
