DescriptionIn Peter Keetman’s photographs, forms repeat endlessly to transform what we perceive to be objective reality. The print seen here is an unconventional portrait seen through a wire screen dotted with water. The overall grid refracts the man’s face behind it, miniaturizing and multiplying his image from various angles, like different frames in a photographic contact sheet. Such innovative works made Keetman one of the most experimental photographers working in Germany after World War II and reached international audiences through three major exhibitions in Cologne in the 1950s titled Subjective Photography.
