In a time of increasing urbanization and modernization in the United States, Doris Ulmann created photographs that depicted disappearing rural traditions and landscapes in danger of urban development. With an 8 x 10–inch, tripod-mounted view camera, which was somewhat old-fashioned for her time, she produced light-filled, timeless images throughout the southeastern United States. By placing the dirt road at the left edge of this composition, Ulmann highlights the long shadows of the trees. The strong, black forms indicate a setting sun and the end of an era.
