Object Type
DescriptionDiego Rivera promoted post-revolutionary
Mexican culture and national identity through
his murals, which expressed a strong commitment to social equality and workers’ rights.
At the same time, Rivera utilized the print
medium to spread his imagery to a larger
audience. He created this lithograph while
visiting New York, re-creating a detail of his
1928 mural cycle in Mexico City’s Ministry of
Education. This tender depiction of campesinos
nestled together for warmth decries the hard
lot of agricultural laborers. Their limp bodies
and fatigued countenances reflect the sorrow
and inequalities faced by the poor and their
deprivation of basic human comforts.
