DescriptionFrom the 1950s to the present, Arnulf Rainer’s work has probed death, pain, and spiritual elevation. Self-Portrait is from his series titled Farce Face, in which Rainer photographed his own face in grimaces and contortions that he felt imitated those of altered mental states—such as dreams, hallucinations, mental illness—that allow the mind to transcend the human condition.
