DescriptionThe battle between the USS Constitution and the HMS Java took place off the coast of Brazil on December 29, 1812. It was a difficult battle for the Constitution, but even with her captain wounded and her steering significantly damaged, she prevailed. The Java surrendered; the Americans determined that they could not tow the Java to port, and so burned the ship, causing her magazine to explode. The damaged Constitution returned to Boston on February 15, 1813.
ProvenanceAcquired by Miss Ima Hogg on November 1, 1962, from Old Print Shop, Inc., NYC.
