After fleeing Nazi Germany and settling in Switzerland, Evelyn Hofer dedicated herself to photography. Her diligence in perfecting photographic techniques was matched by her efforts to bring dignity to all of her subjects. It is possible Hofer felt a kinship with this unnamed girl, captured on the streets of Dublin. Though the world around her is gray and seems to dwarf her, she confidently poses in her boldly colored outfit. Like Hofer’s embrace of the camera to make sense of her changing world, the Irish girl holds tight to her bicycle, determined to move forward.
