Object Type
photography distinguished by its presentation in pairs, two photographs shot
moments apart. The artist uses this device to visualize “gesture and innuendo
and small changes.” Sonneman takes the role of detective in the scenarios she
creates in New York City’s Chinatown, by selecting and pursuing a subject that
is relatively unknown to her. But rather than presenting the subjects as mere
documentaries, she invokes the semiotic reading of the two frames: is one frame
the equivalent or metaphor of the other, or is one frame the cause or effect of
the other?
