DescriptionAlthough John Szarkowski is best known as curator and director (1962–1991) of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where he helped to elevate the status of the medium, he was also an accomplished photographer. He received two Guggenheim Fellowships for photography, and his book The Idea of Louis Sullivan is considered one of the key publications on the architect. Frank Lloyd Wright, Sullivan’s protégé, called Szarkowski’s photographs the best taken of Sullivan’s work.
