At the time of its announcement to the world, the medium of photography was promoted as a means of capturing reality, revealing truth, and presenting the world with clarity. Yet, in the nearly 150 years between that announcement and the production of this still life by the Dutch artist Henze Boekhout, the medium of photography and its visual possibilities had expanded exponentially. Boekhout’s image does not depict any physical reality or truth. With the pink chessboard tilting one direction, objects moving in another, and shadows stretching a third direction, the work is a playful investigation of sight, perception, and the possibilities of photography.
