DescriptionAgricultural fairs grew significantly in popularity in the United States during the first half of the 19th century, seeking to improve the state of farming and farm products and often offering prizes to those who succeeded. This handsome Rococo Revival creamer, made by the Albany firm of Mulford and Wendell, was awarded to William R. Grinnell for prizes won by his Durham bull named “Albion” and his three-year-old stallion named “Champion.”

Inscriptions, Signatures and Marks
Engraved on the front side of the pitcher: "Awarded by the N.Y.S. / Agriculture Society to / Wm. R Grinnell / as 1st Premium on / Horse Champion / 2d Premium on / Bull Albion / at Auburn Sept. 1846"
Stamped underside: "MULFORD & WENDELL / [symbol of a star, the letter "M", and an anchor] / Albany N.Y / 12"
