Károly Escher acquired his first camera in 1902 at age 12
and honed his style over the next two decades, a period in which Hungarian photography
and cinema were gaining greater prominence as part of the European avant-garde.
Having begun his career as a cinematographer, moving into still photography
only in 1928, Escher maintained a cinematic flair, utilizing lighting and movement
to suggest a fluid story. In this dynamic, nearly abstract image of an amusement-park
ride, the varied postures and positions of the silhouetted figures, captured in
multiple exposures, suggest the thrill of arcing through the sky.
