In his series “2, 4, 6, 8,” Brian Finke utilizes a boldly stylized documentary approach to depict quintessentially American archetypes— cheerleaders and football players. Sympathetic to his subjects, but unafraid to confront the more uncomfortable aspects of American culture, Finke juxtaposes the uncertainty of adolescence against the steadfastness of roles defined by their commitment to uniformity and cleanly bifurcated notions of gender. Neither completely celebrating nor criticizing his subjects, Finke’s series captures the unsettling exuberance of both participant and spectator in perpetuating sporting traditions fixated on colliding youthful, heterosexual bodies against one another.
