DescriptionIn
his monograph of Chris Killip, Gerry Badger notes the telling power in a pair
of boots: “Known as ‘bovver’ boots, they are by turns both menacing and
pathetic, symbolizing at once the aggression and vulnerability of youth.” This
photograph, along with the others also published in Killip’s 1988 book In Flagrante, offer keen insight into
the impact of deindustrialization on Northern England during Margaret
Thatcher’s terms as Prime Minister.
