Object Type
The proud, photogenic star of this picture belonged to a new breed of chicken developed at the Poultry Research Station in St. Borki (present-day Birki, Ukraine). The research center—which continues to operate to this day—is the only such facility in the country dedicated exclusively to poultry research and tracks the status and performance of poultry breeds throughout the region. Iosif-Rafail Diament likely intended the picture to promote, rather than simply document, the new breed of chicken.
Provenance[Manfred Heiting, Malibu, California]; purchased by MFAH, 2002.
Inscriptions, Signatures and Marks
Inscribed in purple, verso of sheet, lower part of sheet: "Netyx. Hoboris Topkobekon nopodn / H.U. citannue uinsebodcrba / cr. bagsku xapokoben. odd. Yelp. / P Drauestris / 1936" [handwriting is largely illegible to cataloguer and this is the closest I can make out to what is written]
There is an inscription, possibly a signature in Russian, on the verso of the sheet.
