DescriptionHorst P. Horst’s 1987 photograph references fashion photography of the 1920s and 30s, including that of his mentor, George Hoyningen-Heuné. Working for French Vogue and later Harper’s Bazaar, Hoyningen-Heuné pioneered a style that framed models in simple, classical settings to emphasize elegance of line and form. He studied acrobatics to understand the dynamics of movement and positioned his models in poses that suggested arrested movement. This picture of a bathing suit-clad model is reminiscent of Hoyningen-Heuné’s most iconic image, for which Horst modeled.
