houses and sidewalks spread across the horizon in this recently constructed
housing development located in suburban Fort Worth where freshly planted trees
suggest a newly cultivated and domesticated landscape. People are rarely seen
in Frank Gohlke’s photographs, but their presence is undeniable. Through his
simply composed images, Gohlke draws attention to everyday built environments,
such as residential neighborhoods and industrial parks that often go unnoticed.
Gohlke’s photographs were included in the groundbreaking 1975 exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a
Man-Altered Landscape, which featured straightforward, non-idealized images
of nature transformed for human use.
