This photo was included in the book You Have Seen Their Faces (1937, authored jointly by Margaret Bourke-White and Erskine Caldwell), which illustrated the poverty-stricken lives of southern tenant farmers and sharecroppers during the Great Depression. In the book, the husband is quoted as saying, “A man learns not to expect much after he’s farmed cotton most of his life.”
